My Caregiver Story
My name is Beatrice Kingola before joining GIFi was working as a home care nurse and this is my caregiver story.I was taking care to a hindian patient in nationality She suffed from arthritis, rendering her unable to walk. She was still sharp in mind and a joy to be around. .The difficult part was missing to take her to the mosque that i used to enjoy while she was able to go for prayers. I only had time to run to the mosque to take two packets of milk she used to donate .. But I really missed hanging out while she was in the mosque . . I had cast my life so into hers that I find myself feeling guilty if I go out. She encouraged me to have fun, but I hated seeing her sitting alone.I wish family would realize what a fifteen-minute visit means to an elderly person. I promised her that if she ever needed me, I would be there for her. She became my responsibility. I noticed she was slowing down. I had to do things for her, not with her. She developed crippling arthritis, rheumatoid arthritis. She was constantly in pain. I started enduring her pains as if it’s my own mother. One day I was so tired, I asked her if she would be okay fixing herself something to eat or let me order her something to be delivered for her .
I NEVER LET HER SEE ME FRUSTRATED.I understoond it got annoying to her to not be able to do the things that she once did, so anytime she has an accident like soiling herself, or needs help to get up and down, I made sure she was not embarrassed. I would make a joke of it! When she says she hates to have me doing certain things for her, I would say, “Ma, I am going to be a big burden on my kids. I am going to take advantage of them! You better get on this train ride and ride it out while you can!” She just laughs and tells me she is going to warn them.I was glad to be spending this time making her comfortable and happy. I have learned so much from her. , (I don’t even want to think about it). I am just so glad I had her and could make her smile every day.
